In the wee hours of this morning, the Senate’s vote on the Health Care Freedom Act also known as the “skinny repeal bill” failed. Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) were among those voting against the bill. This defeat came after much deliberation in the Senate during their 20+ hour Vote-a-rama session, dealing a devastating setback to Republican efforts to repeal and replace ACA.

Today the Senate cast a special procedural vote of 51-50 in favor of the Senate being able to continue debate concerning repeal or repeal-and-replace of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It is important to understand that there was no bill passed as a result of today’s vote, and current ACA law is in effect. One key to this outcome was undoubtedly Senator John McCain’s return after being hospitalized, to cast his vote in favor of continued debate today.
