An updated model notice was posted to the DOL website in late July and can be used by employers now to notify employees of eligibility for premium assistance under Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The updated model notice includes contact information for states that offer premium assistance as well as instructions on the application process.
Employers that provide coverage in states that have premium assistance through Medicaid or CHIP are required to inform employees of how they can potentially receive premium assistance for health coverage. The employer must provide premium assistance details based upon the state in which the employee has his/her residence. The information can be provided when the employee first become eligible for the health plan, with annual open enrollment materials, and or be included in the health plan summary plan description. The CHIP Notice is an annual requirement due prior to the start of each plan year.
